“Fletcher” (AN5L 13700) is a superb and restored 1959 Bugeye Sprite in Cotswold blue. Striking!

The car was repainted recently as part of a multi-year restoration, with new sheet metal as needed to restore the foundation before paint. We have just installed a newly-restored four-speed transmission and completely restored the interior, brake lines, wiring harness and a slew of other parts to finish the mechanical restoration of the car.

One of the best parts of my job is that we get to see quite a range of old cars in all configurations and conditions. This is one that we have certainly never seen before but it’s really an interesting expression of how to power your Bugeye.

“Cirrus” (AN5L 25831) is a 948-powered car that has been supercharged and fuel injected with late model Mini Cooper components mated to it. There’s a beautiful high-performance exhaust with an oxygen sensor (also known as a lambda sensor for our English readers) for the fuel injection and a nicely engineered high-pressure pump and return line to feed the injection. No SU carbs, just modern Mini parts to computer manage fuel and ignition, for optimal and reliable fuel and spark. This is by far the fastest 948 Bugeye I have ever driven, quicker than most 1275s.

The guy that built this up was really skilled, and it shows throughout. Cirrus is nicely configured; an aluminum radiator and extra cooling fan, plus a Datsun five speed transmission, so there’s a lot of expensive and wonderful componentry thrown at this car, and it’s a delight to drive. For example, the builder rigged a nice flip forward nose kit with a spring-loaded internal hood release (you can see the release lever under the H knob). The flip forward feature is great for access and the latch is nice for a clean nose with no straps!

Tires are 185/70 for lots of grip. This has been a fair weather car and the roll bars prevent a top from fitting, but we can fit a new tonneau that will keep the cockpit quiet weather-tight. The car is super quick, and the supercharger has a delightful whine that intensifies and the boost builds. This car comes on at about 3200 RPMs and starts to really scream!

We hope to lower the car a bit in the back, and we should be able to make the nose fit a bit better, once we have more time. This is a great car for anyone who wants the tech that goes with fuel injection, coupled with a very quick five speed car! A whole lot of cool stuff is packed into this car!

The result is a car that feels like that Bugeye you saw sometime in the ’70s, when it was the ’70s. In other words, it looks and feels like a Bugeye time capsule, one you might have designed in high school on your notebook during class, or built with your dad, or cobbled together from hot rod parts you accumulated… the car has the look and feel of a great beachside parking lot car that got your attention back in 1974.

Very special 1960 two-owner Bugeye Sprite for sale!

This is “Sawyer,” a 1960 two owner Bugeye with a great story. The car was purchased in Germany in 1960 (note the German badge on the boot) by a serviceman who brought the car with him to multiple countries for each assignment during his 50 years of ownership. In 2011, he moved to Cairo and sold the car to our client in New York at that time, where that second owner had the engine and transmission rebuilt, and the car mostly sat until this week, when we brought the car to our shop.

This car is the perfect car for someone looking for a good-running, well-preserved Bugeye with a “lived-in” aesthetic and a great story!

Sawyer is a very original car, one we would dub a “survivor” in every sense of the word. The original 948 engine runs strong, courtesy of the recent rebuild. The original (and rebuilt) smooth case transmission shifts nicely.

The interior is a bit weathered, and while we could redo it for the new owner, I would be inclined to leave it as is. The interior suits the car, and looks right given this car’s particular story.

We’ll be exhibiting our concours gold Bugeye 501 this week at the Greenwich Concours du Sport, and so this car below, “Betty,” merits another mention. Betty car was shown at the same event a few years ago, and is ready for you to take to any Concours in your neighborhood where it can go bumper to bumper with the best. It’s an exceptional restoration and another already judged gold-level concours Bugeye. If want to take a concours Bugeye to, for example, the Stowe Vermont British Invasion Concours this September, for example, Betty is your girl!

Many people claim that their classic car is restored to “concours” condition… but this is rarely verified. Sure, that new high dollar restoration looks great, but is it accurate? And does it all work?

“Betty” (AN5L 25014) is just such a verified Bugeye, with certificates to prove it! Betty was scrutinized by a team of four independent judges, who poured over the car for over two full hours and inspected every nut and bolt. Their conclusion? They awarded this car Gold level concours certification, the highest honor available for any Austin Healey.
