“Elle” was delivered to her new home yesterday, just in time for the Holidays. Elle was intended to be a gift for the purchaser’s wife, and he decorated it upon its arrival to seal the deal!
According to Tom (the husband), his wife was “thrilled, weepy-eyed, shocked, and most of all, excited!” Congratulations to Elle’s new family!

Solo is the perfect Bugeye for anyone looking for the ultimate in mechanical reliability. The car is fit with a 1275 engine, Datsun five-speed transmission, 3.9 rear end, LED lights, stainless exhaust, electronic ignition, and two recent comprehensive services to ensure it has been fully sorted!
We upgraded the car for an owner in 2022 with about $20,000 in improvements, and then another roughly $10,000 was spent by the most recent owner this year, who drove the car from our shop to Florida and needed optimal reliability. Now, after the 1500 mile excursion to Florida, that customer has decided he wants to move on to a different vehicle, so we have the car for sale again.
Solo has been heavily improved and upgraded with reliability in mind. And it’s a stunning car with chrome wire wheels and a very vintage British racing green finish. We also recovered the dashboard and rebuilt the seat bases with new foam so that the ride is nice and plush.
The Michelin XAS tires also help improve the ride quality to make this Bugeye as comfortable as can be. The cosmetics are not perfect. There are a few little paint imperfections, but they’re minor. I just wante to be clear this is not a brand new paint job… that said, the car shines quite nicely and has excellent curb appeal.

[Read more…] about 1960 5-speed Bugeye Sprite for sale! 1275 engine, four wheel disk brakes!We are quite bullish on upgrading to a roller throwout bearing from the original-style carbon type. You likely don’t need any additional convincing since we’ve talked about this multiple times, but here’s a throwout bearing that has failed in a novel way to further help convince any remaining doubters.
This one seems to have fused to the pressure plate during hibernation, and then split when the driver tried to “break the clutch free.” At the time of breakage, the bushing popped out of the hosing, and the carbon bearing sheared, so now you have two half throwout bearings floating around on the shaft outside their holder, waiting to explode into a bunch of small pieces into the bottom of the bell housing.
The roller throughout upgrade will not do this, as instead of the fragile carbon mating surface, our roller throwout uses a metal one, with a roller bearing behind it. This allows your clutch to engage with much less friction, prolonging the life of both your throwout bearing, and your clutch!

Sage is chassis number AN5L 4337, a 1958 Bugeye production number for a car that was first titled in 1959. The Door tags show BAE 4561 and AN5 04231, both correct and in range with the chassis number, as was the norm when these cars were built (see photo gallery). The car comes with a New Jersey title which records the proper chassis number, AN5L 4337.

One of the chronic Bugeye rust areas is the forward portion of the rocker panel. It would seem that road contaminates thrown off the front wheel attack this part of the car, and accelerate corrosion. The passenger side seems to take the brunt of it because of the crown of the road, which, of course, causes water and salt to gather on the curb side where the right front tire can throw it up.
The car pictured here is one we are preparing for a repaint. It features this exact kind of rust-through on the passenger side, and it is fortunately contained on just the outer skin of the rocker. You can see the box of the passenger footwell (inner sill) is still intact. You can also see the bondo on the back side of the piece we cut away, evidence of a former repair.
Kenny does an artful job cutting away the outer skin, and grafting the front portion onto the balance of the rocker. The result is impressive, and now strong and sealed for many years to come.

Pinion seals, (like everything else in our world), leak.
We change a lot of them. And while the $2.49 seal this is often a great solution (click here if you need one), we all need to be very aware that there is often more to the story. The seal is only part of the battle. What rides on the seal is often the issue.
