Wow, Bugeyes are getting worn out. (We are so glad to be able to restore them!)

This particular car had a number of issues. The front end was loose at every moving part. The kingpins were worn, the fulcrum pins were worn and the control arm mounts were all bent out of shape, possibly from prior crash damage.

We fixed all of it.

More grease might have helped; it’s always good to squirt your front end with some on a regular basis. But these parts have long outlived their useful service life, and sometimes, it’s just time.

Ah, but a tight (restored) front end? 

Heavenly.

This is Bugeye number 268, sold to Bill in May of 2020. When she started jumping out of gear, it was a great excuse to add a five-speed so we picked up the car all the way out in Seattle and brought it to our shop here in Connecticut. And while he was at it, Bill decided more power would be nice… so in went a newly rebuilt 1275. We’re lucky to have those engines in stock now for customers who want to upgrade!

Transformation abounds. Bill also added a new wiring harness and painted wiper motor to dress up this already superb Sprite. Check out the tour and drive below!

Rob’s Bugeye arrived at out shop on dollies a few months ago, and now the car is transformed. Dad raced this Bugeye and built it up for maximum performance. Now Rob, (son) has taken over restoration, and hired us to make the car special again.

Mission accomplished!

This is Mike’s Bugeye he sent to us from Tennessee for a mechanical refresh. Take any average Bugeye with worn-out-everything and sure, it’s tolerable for our teenage bodies, but not so much for the slightly older versions of ourselves. A little bit of comfort goes a long way these days. 

Of all the things we transformed on the Bugeye shown in this video, it is the ride quality upgrade that impressed me the most.

So on Mike’s car, the ride was harsh, and we sprung into action (no pun intended) with a change of the dried-out tires (to fresh supple rubber), along with replacement of the leaking and worn-out shock absorbers to something that actually would dampen the bumps. Then we put in new quarter elliptical leaf springs, as well as new radius arms to dampen the rear end. Add to that the proper components to level the car, and you have good-looking machine that rides wonderfully!
