Very special 1960 two-owner Bugeye Sprite for sale!

NOW SOLD to Chris in NJ. Bugeye # 393 is headed to a new home!

This is “Sawyer,” a 1960 two owner Bugeye with a great story. The car was purchased in Germany in 1960 (note the German badge on the boot) by a serviceman who brought the car with him to multiple countries for each assignment during his 50 years of ownership. In 2011, he moved to Cairo and sold the car to our client in New York at that time, where that second owner had the engine and transmission rebuilt, and the car mostly sat until this week, when we brought the car to our shop.

This car is the perfect car for someone looking for a good-running, well-preserved Bugeye with a “lived-in” aesthetic and a great story!

Sawyer is a very original car, one we would dub a “survivor” in every sense of the word. The original 948 engine runs strong, courtesy of the recent rebuild. The original (and rebuilt) smooth case transmission shifts nicely.

The interior is a bit weathered, and while we could redo it for the new owner, I would be inclined to leave it as is. The interior suits the car, and looks right given this car’s particular story.

I’m just back from a wonderful two week vacation in Iceland, and so this week we’re pushing hard to complete a number of jobs, so I’ll be brief. I did, however, want to share some pictures from the land of midnight sun.

I was shocked to see this MG logo on a cross-over SUV in Iceland. While it may look like somebody added their own badges to a generic late-model car, it’s actually an MG product! Its called the MG ZS (they call it the Zed-S over there) and you can Google to learn more about who makes it and how. I have never in my life seen a more inappropriate matchup between a brand name and a generic car with zero classic vehicle personality. It’s almost comic.

Let Bugeyeguys sort your online auction purchase!

This car came to us after its owner got the high bid on a popular online auction site. We have been going through it for them for the past few weeks in an effort to make it roadworthy!

2023 will probably be written about as the year that online auctions became an even more massive force in classic car sales. More new online platforms are emerging every month for people to purchase antique cars, sight unseen, while relying on social media to vet their vehicles.

This windshield crack was disclosed in the auction. It looked fine, but the car is not really drivable without repair, which we’ll handle for the new owner.
