Gotta keep everything off your paint, especially solvents! And fuel is a strong solvent. Gasoline eats lots of Bugeye butts.
Your modern might be with you for only a few years and then come off lease and go to a new home (and take any paint flaws with it). But your classic car’s paint has to last as long as possible. So you have to take extra care.
Every fuel fill is an opportunity to practice good paint hygiene.
There is no vent in a Bugeye fuel tank (other than the cap), and in fact, no vent in most classic British cars. So when you fill them with fuel, the air you replace with fuel has to come out of the neck while you fill. If you fill too fast, fuel will spill out and that’s one way to damage the paint as shown in these photos.
Relax. Take it slow. Your Bugeye’s posterior will thank you!
