1960 Austin Healey Sprite, budget driver! “PERCY” NOW SOLD!

This is a 1960 Bugeye Sprite called “Percy” (AN5L 22757). Percy needs paint, but is a super driver for anyone looking for an inexpensive Bugeye without cosmetic worry. It’s the ultimate Island car, I could imagine this car at my Block Island house (if I had a Block Island House), just waiting for me after I flew there in my airplane (if I had an airplane). This car has Island patina. It has not been constrained by a life in a garage. And it has had too much sun.

Percy has a 1977 Virgin Island registration sticker on the windshield, maybe that is coloring my imagined history for this particular car. Hey Mon, it’s a Bugeye Mon! Indicated mileage reads 38,814. (The car currently has a clear US title, so no worries about paperwork)

Anyway, the buyer for this car wants a driving project they can restore as they go. Or the buyer has dogs with sharp claws, and doesn’t want to worry about scratches. The underside is solid, consistent with a car that has been in dry climate most if not all of its life. Interior is also quite nice, seats look nearly new.

Bugeye Sprite Sebring Racer update

We’ve just completed an engine swap, five speed conversion, aluminum radiator and rear disk brake conversion on Bill Prout’s RHD Sebring Racer to prepare the car for The Fall Festival this coming Labor Day at Lime Rock Park in NE Connecticut. Hope you can make it-I’ll also have my blue Bugeye “the egg” in the concours—come say hello!

Here’s a short test drive in front of our shop. The Sebring nose is out getting painted, as are the doors, and we should have all the piece back next week. Great fun and an awesome noise!

One of our great customers in NYC called to say his car won’t start, and when he pulls the “S” knob, nothing happens. He says the battery is good and so I wondered if the starter solenoid might have failed-we have seen that before.

Here’s short video that demonstrates how to test the solenoid. Of course you can test these multiple spark free ways (such as with a continuity tester, it’s a simple switch, after all) but in the case of this particular client, a screw driver is what he has to do a down and dirty test, as shown…

NOTE: BE CERTAIN the car is in neutral before messing with your solenoid or you might run yourself over. And make sure to disconnect the battery when and if you replace it. You can order a spare by clicking here…

Caitlyn Jenner’s Bugeye Sprite build

We are extremely excited to be building a Bugeye Sprite for Caitlyn Jenner, who purchased this Bugeye pictured above. As with so many of our customers, Caitlyn’s Bugeye memories run deep. Bruce lusted after dad’d Bugeye as a teen, but dad sold the car before Bruce’s 16th birthday. Now, Caitlyn is having us build a “Dad tribute Bugeye,” complete with a number of performance upgrades, and some nice Dad script on the back.

We’ll keep you posted as we transform this car durning the coming weeks!

Bugeye Sprite Stripes

Remember my slick Bugeye Gumby with the glistening green paint? Here it is, with the paint roughed up down the middle, as Russ the painter gets ready to apply the silver stripes. In order to get a great job, he has to scuff up the green, mask it off, paint the silver stripes over the green, re clear coat it, and then buff all the color back up again.

Along the way, I got to agonize over how wide the stripes should be, and how many pin stripes. We looked at lots of racing stripes, but I kept coming back to Shelby (the blue Bugeye shown), which struck me as the perfectly striped Bugeye. Thus, we have copied that configuration, and now, the tape is laid and the silver stripes will go on this weekend. Russ also had to fit the grill and hood emblem to make sure they will center on the stripes. In this photo, the tape masks the green, so what is blue or yellow will be green, and everything else will be silver. Gumby is already looking better than ever!
